Amazon’s Echo has changed the world of voice command devices and has opened an entirely new world to many people who would have never even dreamed of using voice commands to do anything other than what they watched on some sci fi movie.
But voice recognition is real right now, and it’s getting more and more user friendly thanks mostly to the innovative leader Amazon and their Echo and now Dots system.
But what’s the difference between a dot and the Echo system?
The Echo and Echo Dot both have Amazon’s smart voice assistant Alexa so they both respond accordingly to voice commands as far as telling them both to play some music or ask them what the weather will be like today.
But the biggest difference is what comes out of each rather than what or how it goes in.
The dot, due to it’s compact hockey puck size has a small speaker system that isn’t the best to listen to music. For weather reports and such it is fine. But the bass is lacking and sounds a bit tiny.
So it’s recommended that you use an external speaker with your Dot. The speaker can be plugged into the USB port of it can be synced using its Bluetooth capabilities.
The Echo on the other hand has decent speakers and is fine to listen to the radio or your favorite MP3. Just don’t expect it to sound like some amazing sound system, but for basic stuff it’s adequate.
The Echo is more expensive than the Dot. This should be obvious as the Echo has a much better sound system built in. But even though the Dot is around half the cost, you’ll still need to factor in the external speakers, if you want to have half way decent sound.
But remember, it is not needed, just recommended. If you’re not an audiophile, you may not need them at all.
Personally I use the Dot with an external speaker system when I have it read audio books for me. It’s great listening to the book as I get stuff done around the house. And I’m not alwys in the mood for music. But even just as a book reader, I do suggest getting the speakers.
So Which Should You Buy?
I guess it depends on you. If you already have some external speakers, the Dot may be the way to go. But if you’re looking for a “complete system” with nothing else to buy or fiddle with, then the Echo is the way to go. And although I have not done this review justice, you can find a more in-depth explanation of these 2 systems here, https://www.TechieSense.com/difference-between-echo-and-echo-dot/
Either way, these little gadgets will open an entire new world to you. So grab one or the other. Trust me, you won’t regret it!
